The Artist Apron Dress wraps in the back and comes in two lengths, with two strap options. It cinches at the waist with ties and has a full skirt. The dress works as an apron (with many pockets!) or as a sundress.

The Artist Apron Dress is an adjustable wrap dress that cinches at the waist with ties. The pattern is designed to fit with between 1 and 7 inches (2.5 to 17.8 cm) of ease in the bust, depending on how tightly the dress is wrapped. The waist has 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) of ease when wrapped tightly, but is adjustable up to 4 inches (10.2 cm) of ease. The hip ease is very full.
NOTE: These measurements are for the apron dress wrapped as tightly as possible. Please note that the garment is adjustable up to 4 in more in the waist and 7 in more in the bust. This gives some flexibility to wear the dress tightly as a sundress, or more loosely as an apron, layered over other garments.
Recommended Fabrics, Supplies, and Yardage Requirements
Recommended Fabrics
For the short apron or apron dress, we recommend medium- to heavy-weight wovens: canvas, denim, corduroy, or waxed cotton.
For the sundress, we recommend light- to medium-weight wovens: cottons like broadcloth, chambray, poplin, sateen, shirting, and lightweight twill; and linen and linen blends.
For the lining, we recommend lightweight wovens: cottons like broadcloth, shirting, and lawn.
Stretch wovens are suitable, but knits are not recommended for this design.
Notions & Supplies

The Artist Apron Dress can be worn in so many ways! The waxed canvas carpenter dress is worn with a striped Midge Breton Top. The blue apron top is worn with a black Barbie Top, black Jane Capri pants, and a black Charlotte Beret for a complete artist look. And Susie looks just like Belle (from Beauty and the Beast) in a blue Artist Apron Dress with a white Lizabeth Raglan Top. While the sundress can be worn without anything underneath, Gertie shows one version with a white Rita Blouse.
Sewing Tips & Charm Membership Info
Measure yourself around your upper bust (under your armpits and above your breasts, without a bra on), the fullest part of your bust (while wearing your preferred bra), the smallest part of your waist, and the fullest part of your hips (this is likely around the fullest part of your butt). Make sure to hold the measuring tape snugly and parallel to the ground. Compare your body measurements to the size chart.
Find your upper bust measurement on the size chart to find your garment size, and then scan down the cup sizes in that garment size column to find your cup size. For instance, a 37-inch upper bust will make you a size 10, and a 39-inch full bust means you need a B cup. Don’t worry if your waist doesn’t match the size 10 column’s measurement of 32 inches; you can grade the waist in or out as needed. It is most important to choose a size to fit your upper bust and cup size, as the waist is easier to adjust up or down.
Sewing pattern sizes are very different from ready-to-wear garments and bra sizes, so be sure to work with your measurements when choosing a size.
Charm’s 2-20 size range is designed for a body with an hourglass shape. Our 18-34 size range is designed for a body with less waist definition.

If you have never used a PDF pattern before, this short video is full of tips: How to Use A PDF Pattern.
It will show you how to choose which PDF format to use, how to print just your size(s), and how to easily assemble and cut out your pattern pieces.
We offer digital patterns in two formats: letter-sized PDFs to print at home and A0 sized PDFs to print at a copy shop. In the US, we highly recommend printing A0 files with The Plotted Pattern. Outside of the US, these printers have been recommended.
