Step-by-Step Instructions

Create the pattern pieces

Work out the pattern pieces on paper first, and try them on your head to make sure you like the size and shape. Instead of working with pre-determined measurements, we found it easiest (and more fun!) to play around with paper shapes and try them on as we were working.

Create a circle for the Hat Brim. We made ours 18 inches across with a 6″ diameter center hole. Add a seam allowance to the pattern to the inner circumference of the center hole.

Create the Hat Cone pattern by rolling pattern paper into a cone of your desired height (we made ours 15″ tall) until the lower opening of the cone is the right size to fit the center hole. Connect the two long side edges with a lower curved edge. It should look like a slice of pie!

Once you have your pattern pieces, remember to add seam allowances to all edges.

After removing the outer circumference seam allowance, baste the two buckram brims together using a zigzag stitch. Clip the crown inner seam allowance all the way to the stitch line.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Cut two cardboard pieces into C-shapes. The larger the C, the larger the pompom. We cut ours about 5 inches across, with an inside diameter of about 2 inches. Err on the side of going too big; you can always trim it down using scissors.

Use a binder clip to hold the C-shapes together, sandwiching the shorter nylon strip inside the curve of the C with the tails hanging out at each end. This will be used as the center tie for your pompom.

Wrap the long nylon strips around the C securely, but do not stretch them. Evenly wrap the C with multiple passes.

Once all of the long nylon strips are wrapped, tie the ends of the center tie loosely but do not tie a knot.

Holding it against a hard surface, use sharp scissors to cut the wrapped nylon, cutting in between the two cardboard layers. Keep constant pressure on the strands.

Once all strands have been cut, tie the center tie very tightly and create a knot to secure. Leave the ends long so you can find the center and attach it to your project.

Use very sharp scissors to trim the nylon pompom strands into a ball, being careful not to cut your ties.

Sew the pompoms to your robe ties or on to another garment or craft project. The sky’s the limit when it comes to these pompoms!

Make some lovely faux smile pockets to pair with your Patsy Blouse!

Howdy everyone! I’m so excited to bring you my faux smile pockets tutorial – a quick and easy way to add some western flair to your Patsy Blouse. I love how quickly this transforms the whole feel of a garment – go from prim and proper to full Patsy Cline in just minutes! And best of all, there’s no huge supplies list – grab some cord and a scrap of leather, and you’re good to go! I’ve included a video tutorial as well as written instructions below!

Supplies:

One yard cording

Small scrap of leather or suede (I used this leather trim pack)

Instructions:

Trace smile pockets placement line from Patsy Blouse center front piece onto your garment.

Cut four pieces of cording the length of the smile pocket lines.

Line up one cord below one smile pocket placement line and zigzag stitch cord in place by machine or hand-sew cord in place with a couching stitch.

Repeat with a second piece of cord above the placement line.

Make a triangle template with sturdy cardstock that is roughly ⅝” wide and long.

Trace around the template onto a scrap of leather or suede.

Cut template 4 times out of leather and position one at each end of cord “smiles”, overlapping cord ends by ⅛”, and edgestitch around triangles.

One yard velvet ribbon – opt for 3/4″ to 1″ width

Glue gun

Rotary cutter or scissors

Pin/brooch backing

Instructions:

Cut your ribbon into three lengths:

One 8-½ inch (in) long strip

One 3 in long strip

One 10 in long strip

Create a loop with your 8-½ length of ribbon, overlapping the ends by ½ in. Glue between the layers.

Divide your 10-in strip of ribbon in half lengthwise. Pinch it in the middle and turn the ends down to create the tails of your bow. Ensure they point downwards rather than outwards. Position it behind your ribbon loop from step 2, centering it on the back of the loop. Glue to attach.

Create the bow’s knot by wrapping your 3-in strip of ribbon around the center of the bow loop and between the bow’s tails. Glue in place and trim any excess ribbon on the back of the bow.

Cut the ends at an angle with a rotary cutter for a pretty shape.

Add a strip of glue to attach your pin backing on the back of the bow. Allow to dry.

(You’ll never see us coming!).

For our very first tutorial, we’re bringing you the Holly Hepburn sweater–– we created the Hepburn Top in a cozy wool blend and covered it in holly leaves and berries for a little whimsy. I used my new Cricut machine to cut these out of wool felt, but if you don’t have one you can just as easily cut these by hand (we’ve provided you with files for both approaches!). Finish the whole thing off with some beading and embroidery, and you’ve got a fabulous festive look!

We were inspired by the fabulous Juli Lynne Charlot–– you may know her as the inventor of the Poodle Skirt, but she also created coordinating sweater sets with the sweetest appliques and embellishments. She created this delightful holly cardigan in the ‘50s, and my heart has not known peace since.

The holly appliques pair beautifully with our Hepburn Top (the holly ever so perfectly complements our back v-neck detail), but it’s a great way to jazz up any sweater in your wardrobe too! I can’t wait to see your takes on the design: be sure to tag us using #HollyHepburn so we can see your makes! Full tutorial and resources list below –– happy sewing!

Instructions:

Download the svg or pdf file below. The svg files are for Cricut or other cutting machines, and the pdf can be used to cut out of stencil material and create a traceable stencil trace onto your felt and cut by hand.

Fuse Heat n Bond to the wrong side of your wool felt pieces, leaving the paper intact for now.

Cut your holly leaves and berries from your felt using the method of your choice. For the Cricut, I applied the felt with the paper-side down to the Cricut mat, and rolled it with a brayer to get rid of any bubbles. Use a rotary blade in your machine and cut each set of leaves and berries. Using a pair of tweezers, lift out each cut leaf and berry from your felt (it’s fine if the paper backing comes off at this point).

Remove any remaining paper backing from each of your leaves and berries.

Arrange the leaves in pairs around the neckline of the Hepburn Top and then fuse in place using a press cloth and iron. I used mostly medium green leaves and then added a bright green leaf to every other pair. On the front of the top, I oriented all the leaves in the same direction. On the back, I arranged the leaves around the v-neck, pointing away from the center back and going toward each shoulder.

Sprinkle berries throughout the leaves, alternating colors and sizes of berries randomly. Fuse in place.

Stitch a bead onto every berry with regular all-purpose thread, placing the bead not quite at the center of the berry for a more organic look.

Create long embroidery stitches on the leaves, using three strands of embroidery floss, as shown below.

Today, I bring you a deviously simple neckline hack to transform your Morticia Gown into something befitting the glamour queen herself, Lily Munster. Why choose between Morticia and Lily when you can be both? (For diehard fans of the Munsters, you might recognize that this v-neckline is reminiscent of the gown that Lily wears in the episode "Herman Becomes Human" while the sleeves are her signature batwing shape.)

Opt for a rose lilac neoprene and a touch of lace detailing, and watch the gown transform into something entirely new. Alchemy, perhaps? We also added a bat necklace that is a perfect match for Lily's, as well as a tasseled waist tie.

We used it to add a little bit of drama to Gigi’s Pirate look. It comes together in a pinch, and really transforms any garment into something just a little bit sassier.

Nothing looks more fabulous than a perfectly coordinated belt made in the same fabric as your garments! This tutorial, written for us by Collin Riley, is the process we used to create the belts for our Scout Dress sample dresses. It can be used with most light- to medium-weight fabrics. We combined techniques from both vintage and ready-to-wear examples to create a beautifully finished belt that you will enjoy for years to come!

Materials

Belt fabric and matching thread

Medium to heavy non-woven fusible interfacing

Marine vinyl

Covered belt buckle kit (we used a 1½-in kit)

Microtex needle, size 90/14

Quilter’s clips or paper clips

Awl

5 grommets/eyelets (size 00 or smaller)

Grommet/eyelet setting tool

Small pliers

Resources

Belt buckle kit

A note on covered belt kits

Typically covered belt buckle kits consist of three parts: the outer buckle that is a hollow frame to be wrapped in fabric, the interior piece of the buckle that is pressed into the frame to close it, and the toggle that is crimped around the center bar of the buckle. There are many different shapes and sizes of these kits, and the measurements below are for a 1½-inch (in) rectangular buckle.

Cutting

To create the pattern for a 1½-in fabric-covered belt you will need to cut a rectangle the length of your waist measurement, plus 8 in. For example, a 32-in waist measurement plus 8 gives you a 40-in rectangle. Make the rectangle’s width 2¾ in.

Cut 1 rectangle from fabric, and cut one from interfacing. This will be referred to as the Belt Front.

Also cut 1 rectangle from vinyl the length of the Belt Front, minus 2 in. Make the width 1⅜ in. This will be referred to as the Belt Backing.

Machine-sewn buttonholes or eyelets can be used in place of metal grommets or eyelets. Test this on a scrap of fabric and vinyl sandwiched together and adjust your machine settings as needed.

For a belt buckle without a toggle, you can omit the notches on the belt and the hole for the toggle. Instead, try on the finished belt and sew a hook-and-bar closure invisibly to the belt to secure it closed to your waist measurement.

You can create a seamless belt by using fabric glue in place of topstitching to secure the vinyl backing to the belt front.

I love border print designs from the ’50s, especially anything with a scenic landscape — so I knew we had to make a Camp Gertie-themed print for you, complete with a pink Shasta camper and frolicking fauna! Border prints require some special consideration when it comes to picking your project, but also in deciding how to cut your pattern pieces. If you look at the orientation of the print below, you’ll see that the print runs parallel with the selvage, so the forest scene is in a straight line along one edge. This is why so many border print skirts are dirndl-style, meaning that they are simple rectangles that get gathered at the waist (as opposed to circle skirts that have a curved hem).

Our new Scout Dress (available on Patreon) has gores and a curved hem that make the skirt less than ideal for the straightness of the border print. So here, we’re going to show you how to adapt the Scout Dress for use with our Camp Gertie border print.

Cutting Your Skirt

To create the border print skirt, I cut 3 rectangles. Cut these pieces with the lower half of the print (the forest scene) on the bottom of your skirt, and reserve the upper half of the print (the sky and clouds) for your bodice). Note that you will be cutting everything in a crosswise layout (with the print running horizontally around your body), so the pattern pieces will be turned in a different direction than you may be used to for a conventional cutting layout.

For the skirt front pieces, I cut two rectangles. For the width I measured 36 inches (in), plus 1¼ in for the front facing, and ⅝ in for the side seam allowance, totaling 37⅞ in wide. I like my skirts 27 in long, so for the length I measured 27 in, plus ⅝ in for the waist seam allowance and ⅝ in for the hem allowance, totaling 28¼ in. As you’re cutting, check where the print will be oriented on your front skirt panels to make sure you’re happy with the print placement.

For the skirt back piece, I cut one rectangle 72 in wide, plus ⅝ in seam allowance on both sides, totaling 73¼ in wide by 28¼ in long.

Sewing the Skirt

Interface skirt front opening: using the skirt front interfacing (14) pattern piece, apply interfacing to the (WS) of center front of both skirt front pieces.

Finish vertical edges on skirt front and skirt back pieces using your desired method. Finish edges on Pocket Bag (13).

Attach pockets to skirt: pin pocket bag to each side seam on the skirt front and skirt back piece RS together. Stitch using a ⅜-in (1 cm) seam allowance. Press pockets toward seam allowances.

Sew side seams: pin skirt fronts to the skirt back at the side seams. Stitch. Pivot at top and bottom of pockets and stitch around pocket edges. Clip into pivot points on back seam allowances, and press pockets toward skirt front. Press seam allowances open above and below pockets.

Gather skirt: using a 4-mm- to 5-mm-long gathering stitch, sew two lines of stitching along the skirt waist edge, starting and ending 2-½ in from the skirt front opening edges. Sew the first using a ½-in-wide (1.3 cm) seam allowance and the second using a ¼-in-wide (6 mm) seam allowance. Pull up bobbin threads from each side toward the center back to gather skirt.

Attach skirt to bodice: pin gathered skirt to bodice, matching side seamlines. Stitch. Grade seam allowances so bodice’s is the widest. Finish seam allowances as desired. Press seam allowances toward bodice. Press bodice and skirt facing to inside of dress.

Sew buttonholes on right half of skirt opening: mark buttonhole placement on fabric RS, using the Scout Dress skirt pattern as a guide for the placement. Sew buttonholes following your machine’s buttonhole instructions and

Sew buttons to left half of skirt opening to correspond to buttonholes.

Hem the dress: Press up the hem allowance and turn in the skirt front facings. Narrow-hem the skirt by machine or invisibly by hand, catching the facings in your stitching.

Enjoy your beautiful border print Scout Dress!
