Recommended Fabrics

For the tulle, we recommend: non-stretch soft ballet tulle.

The Étoile Petal Top uses the same finished measurements as the Étoile Bodice pattern.

Measure yourself around your upper bust (under your armpits and above your breasts, without a bra on), the fullest part of your bust (while wearing your preferred bra), the smallest part of your waist, and the fullest part of your hips (this is likely around the fullest part of your butt). Make sure to hold the measuring tape snugly and parallel to the ground. Compare your body measurements to the size chart.

Find your upper bust measurement on the size chart to find your garment size, and then scan down the cup sizes in that garment size column to find your cup size. For instance, a 37-inch upper bust will make you a size 10, and a 39-inch full bust means you need a B cup. The Siren Bodice is a fitted, lined knit bodice with cut-on cowl sleeves and a jewel neckline with a keyhole opening. The cup sizing on this design is a little different than our other patterns. Because knits have a very forgiving fit, we have grouped more cup sizes together than usual: A–C and D–H.

The pattern is designed to fit with between negative 1/4 inch( to negative 2-1/4 inches (-0.6 cm to -5.7 cm) of ease at the waist. Because of the way the arm drapes at the side seams, there is significant bust ease in this pattern, so the bust ease measurements should not be used when picking a size.

Measure yourself around your upper bust (under your armpits and above your breasts, without a bra on), the fullest part of your bust (while wearing your preferred bra), the smallest part of your waist, and the fullest part of your hips (this is likely around the fullest part of your butt). Recommended Fabrics

We recommend opaque woven fabrics of any weight: cottons like lawn, broadcloth, sateen, corduroy, and canvas; linen and linen blends; wool suiting, gabardine, and tweed; rayon challis or twill; silk taffeta, dupioni, shantung; and brocade. Nearly any woven fabric can
be used as long as it has enough structure to support the items you will put into the handbag. Lighter weight fabrics are appropriate for the smaller bag, and heavier weight fabrics can be used for the larger bag.

Stretch wovens are acceptable, but knit fabrics are not recommended.

For the lining, we recommend light- to medium-weight woven fabrics: cotton lawn, shirting, broadcloth, sateen, and cotton/silk blends work well. You can also line the bag with any of the light- to medium-weight fabrics listed for the outer fabric.

For the fusible fleece interfacing, we recommend: Pellon 987F, although any fusible fleece can be used. You can also use sew-in fleece interfacing, if desired.

The Make Do and Mend Dress uses the bodice from the Make Do and Mend Overalls for a semi-fitted, one-piece dress with bust shaping, a side button closure, A-line skirt, and a shirred elastic back for comfort. The dress is designed to be worn over a shirt, but can also be worn without. The strap length is adjustable.

The pattern is designed to fit with between 1/4 and 6 inches (0.6 to 15.24 cm) of ease in the bust, 3/4 inches (1.9 cm) of negative ease to 5-3/4 inches (14.6 cm) of positive ease at the waist, and 8 to 10 inches (20.3 to 25.4 cm) of ease in the hips. The skirt measures 27-1/2 inches (69.9 cm) in length, measured at the center back. See the pattern instructions for the finished pattern measurements.

The Make Do and Mend Dress expansion requires the pattern pieces and instructions from the Make Do and Mend Overalls pattern. Gertie is wearing the Make Do and Mend dress with a floral Rita Blouse.

Measure yourself around your upper bust (under your armpits and above your breasts, without a bra on), the fullest part of your bust (while wearing your preferred bra), the smallest part of your waist, and the fullest part of your hips (this is likely around the fullest part of your butt). Make sure to hold the measuring tape snugly and parallel to the ground. Compare your body measurements to the size chart.

Find your upper bust measurement on the size chart to find your garment size, and then scan down the cup sizes in that garment size column to find your cup size. For instance, a 37-inch upper bust will make you a size 10, and a 39-inch full bust means you need a B cup. Don’t worry if your waist doesn’t match the size 10 column’s measurement of 32 inches; you can grade the waist in or out as needed. It is most important to choose a size to fit your upper bust and cup size, as the waist is easier to adjust up or down.

Sewing pattern sizes are very different from ready-to-wear garments and bra sizes, so be sure to work with your measurements when choosing a size.

Recommended Fabrics

For a sheer Galentine’s Apron, we recommend: silk organdy, underlined in silk organza. This is what we used.

For a non-sheer apron, we recommend: cotton sateen, broadcloth, lawn, eyelet, and shirtings. Alternatively, for a more glamorous finished garment, silk taffeta, dupioni, or shantung may also be used.

For the apron support, we recommend: lightweight tricot or woven fusible interfacing, or silk organza.

For the decoration, we recommend: ribbon, trims, beads and bobs. Basically, anything!
