The Lorelei Gown is a very fitted knit garment with negative ease. It is designed to hug the body closely in the bodice, sleeve, and panty, and to skim the body in the skirt.

The pattern is designed to fit with between 1 and 11/2 in (2.5 to 3.8 cm) of negative ease in the bust, 1 to 2 in (2.5 to 5.1 cm) of negative ease at the waist, and 0 to 3/4 in (0 to 1.9 cm) of positive ease in the hips.

Recommended Fabrics, Supplies, and Yardage Requirements

Recommended Fabrics

For the outer fabric, we recommend knits with 25–50% stretch in the widthwise grain and zero to very little stretch in the lengthwise grain. This means that if you take 4 inches (10.2 cm) of relaxed fabric in your hands, it should stretch to 5 or 6 inches (12.7 to 15.2 cm). We recommend interlock, ponte, double knits, stretch velvet, stretch sequins, ITY, and wool knits.

For the lining fabric, we recommend knits with a similar stretch percentage as the main fabric: soft interlock, ponte, double knits, and ITY.

For the sheer center front insert panel, we recommend: nylon or polyester power mesh with 50–70% stretch and about 10% spandex. For a nude-illusion look, choose a power mesh similar to your skin tone. Stretch lace or stretch tulle may also be used. NOTE: power mesh is a lightweight fabric and cannot be substituted with power net.

For the power net underlining, we recommend: mediumweight/regular or heavyweight/firm nylon power net with 10–25% spandex.

Wovens and stretch wovens are not recommended for this design.

Notions & Supplies

  • Fabric for the dress
  • Fabric for the lining
  • Power mesh for the center front insert panel (if desired)
  • Power net for underlining the bodice and panty
  • Thread to match the dress fabric and the power mesh
  • 1¼-in-wide (3.2 cm) fusible knit stay tape to stabilize the zipper opening (alternatively, cut a strip from a scrap of fusible knit interfacing yardage)
  • 28-in regular nylon zipper (shorten as needed)
  • 3 yds (2.7 m) 1/4-inch-wide (6 mm) picot lingerie elastic for the panty
  • 1 to 2 yds (0.9 to 1.8 m) of 1-inch-wide (1.3 cm) elastic for the waist stay
  • Two pairs of hook-and-eye closures for the waist stay
  • A short length of snap tape (or create your own using twill tape and 3 press studs/snaps) for the panty (optional)
  • One pair of foam bra cups (optional)

Sewing Tips & Charm Membership Info

Measure yourself around your upper bust (under your armpits and above your breasts, without a bra on), the fullest part of your bust (while wearing your preferred bra), the smallest part of your waist, and the fullest part of your hips (this is likely around the fullest part of your butt). Make sure to hold the measuring tape snugly and parallel to the ground. Compare your body measurements to the size chart.

Find your upper bust measurement on the size chart to find your garment size, and then scan down the cup sizes in that garment size column to find your cup size. For instance, a 37-inch upper bust will make you a size 10, and a 39-inch full bust means you need a B cup. Don’t worry if your waist doesn’t match the size 10 column’s measurement of 32 inches; you can grade the waist in or out as needed. It is most important to choose a size to fit your upper bust and cup size, as the waist is easier to adjust up or down.

Sewing pattern sizes are very different from ready-to-wear garments and bra sizes, so be sure to work with your measurements when choosing a size.

Charm’s 2-20 size range is designed for a body with an hourglass shape. Our 18-34 size range is designed for a body with less waist definition.

    Fabric Notes

    We recommend lightweight drapey fabrics in natural fibers that will be soft against your skin: rayon challis, Bemberg/cupro, and viscose; soft cottons like lawn, sateen, and voile; nylon tricot; and silk crepe de chine, habotai, or charmeuse. Cotton or rayon lining fabrics and lightweight silk/cotton blends are also a good choice.

    We recommend against using polyester fabrics for this project, since man-made fibers will trap heat and moisture against your skin.

    For the tap pants gusset: we recommend natural fiber woven or jersey fabric. Cotton, bamboo, and silk are all appropriate.

    For the tap pants interfacing: we recommend fusible lightweight or very lightweight woven or tricot interfacing for the button guard on the tap pants. For sheer fabrics and lace, we recommend underlining the button guard with silk organza in your skin tone instead.

    For the optional lace: we recommend any non-stretch, light- to medium-weight lace. Lace appliqués, lace yardage, and lace trims are all wonderful options!

    The pattern is designed to fit with between 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches (3.2 to 3.8 cm) of ease in the bust and 1 inch (2.5 cm) of ease at the waist.

    Recommended Fabrics, Supplies, and Yardage Requirements

    Recommended Fabrics

    We recommend light- to medium-weight wovens: cottons like broadcloth, sateen, and twill; linen and linen blends; wool suitings and tweed; brocade; silk taffeta, dupioni, and shantung; and silk/wool blends.

    For the lining, we recommend very lightweight wovens: cottons like voile or lawn; silks like charmeuse, crepe de chine, or habotai; lining fabrics like rayon bemberg, acetate, or silky polyester; and silk/cotton blends.

    For the U-Back structural layer and facing, we recommend: sturdy cotton canvas, duck, or coutil.

    Stretch wovens may be used, but knit fabrics are not recommended for this design.

    Sewing Tips & Charm Membership Info

    Measure yourself around your upper bust (under your armpits and above your breasts, without a bra on), the fullest part of your bust (while wearing your preferred bra), the smallest part of your waist, and the fullest part of your hips (this is likely around the fullest part of your butt). Make sure to hold the measuring tape snugly and parallel to the ground. Compare your body measurements to the size chart.

    Find your upper bust measurement on the size chart to find your garment size, and then scan down the cup sizes in that garment size column to find your cup size. For instance, a 37-inch upper bust will make you a size 10, and a 39-inch full bust means you need a B cup. Don’t worry if your waist doesn’t match the size 10 column’s measurement of 32 inches; you can grade the waist in or out as needed. It is most important to choose a size to fit your upper bust and cup size, as the waist is easier to adjust up or down.

    Sewing pattern sizes are very different from ready-to-wear garments and bra sizes, so be sure to work with your measurements when choosing a size.

    Charm’s 2-20 size range is designed for a body with an hourglass shape. Our 18-34 size range is designed for a body with less waist definition.

    Fabric Notes

    For the Monroe Dress or Pleated Skirt, we recommend light- to medium-weight wovens with plenty of drape: cotton lawn, batiste, and twill; silk twill and crepe; wool crepe and gabardine; linen and linen blends; silk or polyester lamé; and rayon/lyocell/tencel challis, twill, or gabardine. Light- to medium-weight wovens with less drape, like cotton poplin or broadcloth, are suitable for the bodice and slim skirt, but will result in a stiffer look on the pleated skirt. Stretch wovens are acceptable, but knits are not suitable for this design.

    For the lining, we recommend light- to medium-weight cottons and lining fabrics. You will be sewing boning channeling to the lining, so it should be sturdy enough to stand up to the weight of the steel boning.

    For the optional interior bra, we recommend heavyweight nylon/spandex power net with 50% stretch. Power mesh is not a suitable substitute.

    Recommended Fabrics, Supplies, and Yardage Requirements

    Recommended Fabrics

    We recommend medium-weight stable knit fabrics: ponte, interlock, and double knits; wool and wool blends, cotton and cotton blends, cashmere, and rayon/poly/spandex knit blends.

    Look for fabrics with 20% to 30% stretch in the widthwise grain and zero or very little stretch in the lengthwise grain.

    If you find a fabric that stretches in the lengthwise direction, you will need to modify the cutting layouts and orient the pattern pieces so that the stretch goes horizontally around the body. If using a fabric with more or less stretch, you may need to adjust the fit of the pattern (stretchier fabrics will result in a looser fit and vice versa).

    Woven fabrics are not recommended for this pattern.

    Measure yourself around your upper bust (under your armpits and above your breasts, without a bra on), the fullest part of your bust (while wearing your preferred bra), the smallest part of your waist, and the fullest part of your hips (this is likely around the fullest part of your butt). Make sure to hold the measuring tape snugly and parallel to the ground. Compare your body measurements to the size chart.

    Find your upper bust measurement on the size chart to find your garment size, and then scan down the cup sizes in that garment size column to find your cup size. For instance, a 37-inch upper bust will make you a size 10, and a 39-inch full bust means you need a B cup. Don’t worry if your waist doesn’t match the size 10 column’s measurement of 32 inches; you can grade the waist in or out as needed. It is most important to choose a size to fit your upper bust and cup size, as the waist is easier to adjust up or down.

    Sewing pattern sizes are very different from ready-to-wear garments and bra sizes, so be sure to work with your measurements when choosing a size.

    The Drama Club Cape is an outerwear garment that is fitted at the shoulders, with a generous trapeze fit at the hem. The center front panel is belted to the body, but the remainder of the cape swings free.

    Use the size chart to choose a size. Finished measurements are irrelevant for this pattern due to the generous ease provided by the back of the cape.

    The center back length of the cape is 35-1/2 inches (90.2 cm) and the center front length (from the center of the top button to the bottom edge of the cape) is 22 inches (55.9 cm).

    The Pep Rally Skirt is designed to fit with 0 inches (0 cm) of ease at the natural waist. Due to the pleats, the hip measurement is very full.

    Recommended Fabrics, Supplies, and Yardage Requirements

    Recommended Fabrics

    We recommend medium-weight wovens: cottons like denim, pinwale corduroy, sateen, and twill; wool suitings, flannel, and tweed; brocade; or silk/wool blends.

    For the bodice lining, we recommend: lightweight silks like charmeuse, crepe de chine, or habotai; lining fabrics like rayon bemberg, acetate, or silky polyester; cotton lawn; and silk/cotton blends.

    Stretch wovens and knit fabrics are not recommended for this design.

    Sewing Tips & Charm Membership Info

    Measure yourself around your upper bust (under your armpits and above your breasts, without a bra on), the fullest part of your bust (while wearing your preferred bra), the smallest part of your waist, and the fullest part of your hips (this is likely around the fullest part of your butt). Make sure to hold the measuring tape snugly and parallel to the ground. Compare your body measurements to the size chart.

    Find your upper bust measurement on the size chart to find your garment size, and then scan down the cup sizes in that garment size column to find your cup size. For instance, a 37-inch upper bust will make you a size 10, and a 39-inch full bust means you need a B cup. Don’t worry if your waist doesn’t match the size 10 column’s measurement of 32 inches; you can grade the waist in or out as needed. It is most important to choose a size to fit your upper bust and cup size, as the waist is easier to adjust up or down.

    Sewing pattern sizes are very different from ready-to-wear garments and bra sizes, so be sure to work with your measurements when choosing a size.

    Charm’s 2-20 size range is designed for a body with an hourglass shape. Our 18-34 size range is designed for a body with less waist definition.
